"Our arithmetic" means we converted the vendor's credit or plan prices into a per-1,000 figure ourselves. Items marked unverified came from third-party summaries, not the vendor.
Who should pick what
This is about price and paperwork only. We have not tested accuracy, speed or support.
You already buy shipping labels
Check your shipping API first. EasyPost verifies addresses free with each label bought (standalone: $0.02 domestic). Shippo charges 2¢ per US validation.
Under 5,000 checks a month
Google Address Validation (Pro) includes 5,000 free requests a month. Over that, it's $17 per 1,000 up to 100K, which is pricey at low volume.
Small, steady US volume with a simple bill
Smarty ($17/month for 1,000; $50 for 5,000; $88 for 10,000) and PostGrid ($18/month for 2,000 plus $0.02 each extra) publish clear monthly plans.
You mail things and can handle paperwork
USPS is one of the cheapest paid options at small volume ($10 flat for up to 2,000 requests) but needs a license, a funded payment account and a countersigned agreement. The license limits use and forbids reselling.
100,000+ US checks a month
Compare Smarty annual (2M/year for $4,980, about $2.49 per 1,000), USPS ($4.00 per 1,000 over 50K) and Google volume tiers. Above published tiers, ask for quotes.
International or type-ahead capture
Loqate (245+ countries, credit packs), PostGrid international plans, Smarty international and Google all publish prices.
UK addresses
Ideal Postcodes (£9 for 200 credits) and Postcoder (from £25). getAddress.io shut down on February 4, 2026 after losing a High Court case.
Big company, procurement, SLAs
Experian and Precisely are contact-sales only. Melissa sells annual subscriptions as well as credits.
You only need a pin on a map
A geocoder may be enough and much cheaper, but it does not tell you whether mail can be delivered. See the table below.
Geocoders (not postal verification)
Geocoders turn an address into map coordinates. They are not the same as postal deliverability checks (no DPV). Cheaper, but a different job.

Common pricing traps
- Credits that convert differently by country (Melissa's FAQ: 3 credits for a US address, 10 for a global one).
- Plans that stop when lookups run out unless auto-renew is on (Smarty can return a 402 error).
- One-time verification fees (Melissa: $4.97 for free credits).
- Prepaid credits that expire (Loqate: 12 months).
- Annual contracts with no free tier (Radar) and "contact sales" pricing (Experian, Precisely).
- USPS's new setup: business portal, funded payment account, DocuSign, then waiting for USPS to countersign.
